Abstract:

To address the inherent trade-off between permeability and rejection in conventional separation membranes during dye/salt separation, a loose nanofiltration hollow fiber membrane with both high permeability and excellent dye/salt separation performance was fabricated via a non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) coupled interfacial crosslinking strategy. First, hollow fiber substrates rich in hydroxyl groups (-OH) (denoted as MX) were prepared by the NIPS method using polyethersulfone (PES) and hydroxylated polyethersulfone (PES-OH) with a mass ratio of 1∶1 at different polymer concentrations (X% represented the mass fraction). Subsequently, interfacial crosslinking between the surface -OH groups of the substrate membrane and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) was carried out to fabricate PES/PES-OH@TMC loose nanofiltration hollow fiber membranes (MTMC-X). The results showed that, compared with the pristine substrate membrane M24, the crosslinked membrane MTMC-24 exhibited significantly enhanced mechanical properties, with the tensile strength increasing from 5.8 MPa to 7.0 MPa and the elongation at break rising from 7.2% to 12.1%. Meanwhile, the membrane pore size decreased from 2.33 nm to 1.42 nm. Notably, the permeability of the MTMC-24 membrane [420 L/(m2·h·MPa)] was three times higher than that of the M27 membrane possessing a comparable rejection toward eriochrome black T dye. These results demonstrate that, compared with the conventional strategy of improving rejection solely by increasing the casting solution concentration, the NIPS-interfacial crosslinking coupling strategy can more effectively mitigate permeability loss while enhancing membrane separation performance, thereby significantly improving both permeability and selectivity. This work provides a new strategy for the fabrication of high-performance loose nanofiltration membranes.
