A poly(styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA)/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) blend membrane was used as a catalyst for producing biodiesel from acidic oil. The effects of methanol-oil ratio, reaction time, catalyst amount and temperature on the esterification conversion of fatty acids were investigated through response surface method. Results show that the order of their effects on the conversion was methanol-oil ratio > catalyst amount > temperature > reaction time. The interaction effect between methanol-oil ratio and catalyst amount on the conversion was most significant; nevertheless the interaction effects related with reaction time was less significant. A quadratic polynomial equation was obtained for esterification conversion by multiple regression analysis. The optimum conditions for the esterification obtained were methanol-oil mass ratio of 1.2:1, the amount of catalyst of 1.56meq/g of oil, temperature of 64.5℃ and reaction time of 7 h. The experimental conversion was 94.60%,close to the predicted conversion(97.27 %) by the equation. |
