Abstract:

Membrane fouling is a critical challenge limiting the long-term stability and wide-spread application of membrane bioreactors (MBRs). This paper systematically reviews the formation mechanisms and major influencing factors of membrane biofouling in MBR systems. In particular, this review focuses on biological-based control strategies for membrane biofouling, such as quorum quenching, enzymatic degradation, energy uncoupling,  the application of bacteriophage, and various technical synergistic control and integrated processes. Furthermore, this paper conducts a comparative analysis of their respective mechanisms of action, control efficiencies, application costs, and engineering challenges. Finally, future development trends are discussed, with the aim of providing a theoretical foundation and technical reference for the construction of an efficient, stable, low-cost, and environmentally sustainable MBR operation system.
